This is one of my favourite easy hikes, an hour from Graz, at Teichalm lake. It’s about an hour mostly through the woods with lovely meadows and mountain views. So good for warm days and it’s not very steep so family friendly too. The destination is the Tyrnaueralm hütte, a small rustic hut with simple food – sausages, ham & cheese bread platters and cake (open May – October). A nice place to rest and enjoy the view. You can admire the Roten Wand mountain and continue on for a longer hike, or do a circular walk back down through the valley, or return through the woods (my favourite route both ways). Even when Teichlam is full of visitors this is usually a quiet hike.
I follow the bottom red path on the map below, from Teichalm lake to Tyrnaueralm (G) and then the same way back again, it’s clearly marked along the way. The hike starts at a wooden gate opposite the lake (just before the ski school / cafe hut). You’ll see lots of yellow signs – follow path 745 Roten Wand weg. There are also signs to the Tyrnaueralm hütte. Stroll up through the meadow and cross over the ski run into the woods. Then just keep following the signs to Tyrnaueralm.
If you are with kids and want a slightly shorter walk, you can park in the carpark at the entrance to the Adventure Park . Then take the path that goes up the hill alongside the climbing area to join up with the main path. You can then bribe the kids with a chance to go climbing on their way back 🙂 .
